Ever since the unraveling of the DNA molecule by Watson and Crick, we have witnessed numerous important breakthroughs in the world of biotechnology, contributing to for instance health and sustainability. On the other hand, such developments have also occasionally stumbled upon societal resistance. Also In the 21st century developments in biotechnology are advancing a rapid speed and are likely to provoke debate. Recent years however, we have witnessed an increased awareness amongst policy makers and scientists about the importance to address societal aspects of emerging technology early on in a transparent manner. The Working Group on Societal Aspects of Biotechnology applauds this development and intends to contribute to the proper societal embedding of biotechnology in the Dutch society, by means of dialogue and communication. Against this backdrop the Working Group will be undergoing some transformation and extension.
