Biotechnology for a sustainable society

In today's world of pollution, environmental exploitation, global warming and (infectious) diseases, there is a clear need for sustainable production systems, and a more bio-based economy. Many researchers in both public and private organisations focus on this subject. Biotechnology is one of the ways to make these sustainable production systems. Applications range from the introduction of desirable traits in crops, to the production of bio-fuels and from providing solutions for a clean environment to the conception of novel diagnostic tools to improve plant, animal and human health.

The Netherlands Biotechnology Congress

An open and ongoing dialogue between researchers and between researchers and society is essential to stimulate the exchange of ideas and to improve the sustainable production systems. Therefore, the NBV organises this meeting on the 11th and 12th of March, 2010. It highlights different aspects of biotechnology. The congress is organised to meet the interest of the members of the Netherlands Biotechnological Society and those who are interested in biotechnology and its developments. It aims to present and discuss the latest developments and challenges in biotechnology, the place of biotechnology in society, and to create a stimulating environment where science, business and society can meet. The 2-day programme features keynote lectures by experts in their field. The following keynote speakers already have agreed to give a presentation:

Ron Fouchier (Erasmus University, Rotterdam) - Influenza pandemic

Gjalt Huisman (Codexis Inc., USA) - Industrial biotechnology

Michele Morgante (University of Udine, Italy) - Crop science

Christine Mummery (Leiden University) - Embryonic stem cells

Mario Tredici (University of Florence, Italy) - Algae

Willy Verstraete (University of Gent, Belgium) - Environmental

During parallel sessions different aspects of biotechnology will be highlighted. The sessions cover the full spectrum of biotechnology: industrial, medical, environmental, marine biotechnology.

The finals of the student contest “Imagine…” will take place during NBC-13. “Imagine…” is a competition for high school students, who will write a business plan to implement an application of biotechnology in a developing country (http://foundation-imagine.org/).
